If you’ve been following our blog, you know I’m usually out on the road showing guests our hidden waterfalls or the best sunset spots. But this May 31st, everyone is heading north to Tanjung Rhu for the Langkawi Swim Fest 2026.
Even if you aren’t a marathon swimmer, this is one of the most beautiful days to be on the island. The water at Tanjung Rhu is like a mirror, and seeing hundreds of swimmers head out toward the limestone stacks is something you don’t want to miss.
Here is everything you need to know to have a smooth, stress-free day at the beach.
The Event Details (Quick Facts)
- When: Sunday, May 31, 2026
- Where: Dataran Tanjung Rhu (Right at the end of the northern road).
- What Time: Flag-off starts early, around 7:30 AM. I recommend being there by 6:45 AM if you want to see the start!
- Distances: Swimmers will be tackling 1km, 2km, and the “big one”—the 4km loop.
Roy’s Local Advice for Spectators
1. The “Secret” Breakfast Spot While most people crowd the hotel cafes, my team and I usually head to the small local stalls about 500 meters back from the beach. Look for the aunties selling Nasi Lemak and Kuih-Muih. It’s authentic, cheap, and the perfect way to wait for your friends to finish their swim.
2. Don’t Underestimate the Tanjung Rhu Sun Tanjung Rhu is famous for its white sand, but that sand reflects the sun like a mirror. Even at 9:00 AM, it gets hot! Bring a hat, a good pair of sunglasses, and plenty of water. If you’re coming with us in our tour van, you can always leave your extra gear in the AC and come back for a cool-down.
3. Combine Your Trip with the Mangroves Since you’re already in the north, you are literally 5 minutes away from the Kilim Geoforest Park. Once the prize-giving ceremony is over (usually around 11:00 AM), it’s the perfect time to jump on a boat tour. The tide is usually great at that time of day for seeing the eagles and the hidden caves.
Getting There Without the Headache
I’ll be honest with you—parking at Tanjung Rhu on race day is a bit of a nightmare. The road is narrow, and once the parking lots are full, people start parking on the grass for miles.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Tanjung Rhu closed to the public during the race? Not entirely! The swim path is marked with buoys for safety, so you can’t swim in the “race lanes,” but the rest of the beach is open for you to enjoy.
What should I bring? A waterproof bag is a must if you plan to get close to the water. Also, bring a towel and a change of clothes—even if you aren’t swimming, you’ll likely want to dip your feet in!
Can I book a tour on the same day? Yes! We actually recommend it. Most people finish with the Swim Fest by noon. That leaves the whole afternoon for us to take you to the SkyBridge or a nice local lunch spot.
